Family Budget Meal Plan #53

We started meal planning on and off about 3 or 4 years ago but I have been making regular weekly meal plans for the last 2 years. By planning our meals, making, and sticking to, a shopping list our food shop costs dropped from £120 a week to around £60-80 a week, which is a great saving in itself yet by also changing the day and time we shop, from a Saturday afternoon to a Friday night, we have reduced our food shop BY HALF again, and so now our shop each week comes to between £30 and £45. I highly recommend heading out to the supermarkets for the end of day yellow sticker bargains if you can, both me and Dean used to turn our nose up at the people hanging around for the reduction's trolley, but how wrong we were! I will get around to writing a post and maybe filming a video to tell you how to shop yellow sticker stuff smartly, I promise!

You can watch my meal planning process on YouTube,  we also share regular grocery hauls, meal ideas and more. Be sure to subscribe if that's your thing!

I haven't meal planned for a good couple of months now, I was trying to empty the freezer and the cupboards ready for Christmas, and I always like to make a fresh start at the beginning of the year, It was needed too, I found sauces in the back of the cupboard that hadn't been opened in the last year'or so, and it has made so much extra space and made planning a lot easier.
I post some of our makes, bakes and meals over on our new foodie based account over on Instagram @feedingmyfamilyforless, I neglected the page whilst I wasn't meal planning but for 2020 I am planning on sharing some cook with me videos and grocery hauls on IGTV too, so please click the follow button if you are on Instagram, it would mean the world!

Any way enough of the gabble, here is this week's meal plan...

Saturday. Leftovers & freezer empty

We had some pasta and bits leftover in the week, as well as some last bits in the freezer that have been hanging around for an age! So I'll just make everything up and everyone can choose what they want...I mean it will be a mish mash of randomness but at least there won't be much waste this week.

Sunday. Sweet and sour smoked sausage with rice

I saw this recipe whilst searching for something else and thought it sounded nice, not sure what 'smokies'are as refered to in the recipe but I will swap it out with some smoked sausage, and serve it with some veggie rice and maybe some prawn crackers.

Monday. Slow cooker gammon, chips, eggs and peas

Family fave, the gammon goes melt in the mouth after being cooked in the slow cooker, and there is always enough left over to make a yummy second meal later in the week.

Tuesday. Salmon with bulgar wheat and roasted veggies

I have some salmon left from when we had fish pie last week, I also have half a bag of bulgar wheat that has been hanging around longer than I care to admit so I thought this bowl of deliciousness would be perfect topped with some sticky salmon.

Wednesday. Leftover ham and leek mac and cheese

Remember that gammon I am cooking on Monday? The leftovers will go into this amazing sounding mac and cheese, and with some buttery leeks stirred through too...I'm salivating at the thought! Yum!!

Thursday. Slow cooker jacket potatoes with cheese, beans and tuna

Thursday is my busy day, we have my niece for a school night sleepover (I know what you are thinking, and yep I think I am nuts!!) and we have football training so it makes sense for tea to be something super quick, slow cooker potatoes mean we can all eat at different times, the kids can eat after school, Ellie eats a little later whilst we are at training and me and dean eat once the kids have gone bed.

Friday. Spinach, sweet potato and lentil dahl with pakoras and bhajis

I keep seeing lentil dahl on Instagram, and I am yet to make it, tonight will be the night...served with some of the bhajis and pakoras leftover from a party buffet box we got from Iceland at Christmas!
