Mermaid Sensory Bin With Water Beads

This summer, lets face it, has been somewhat of a wash out, and its been tough trying to find so many rainy day play ideas. A sensory bin is always a great boredom buster and I always make sure we have lots of sensory bin fillers in our craft cupboard. So that when boredom hits I can quickly whip up something like this mermaid themed sensory bin to keep the mini monsters busy!

Once you have all of your bits in the sensory bin, you can chose to add some scoops, tubs etc if you wish. I used a glass bottle that we got our shells in (Poundland) and they used their fingers to fill as we found with tweezers those water beads shoot everywhere!!

My favourite thing about this sensory bin was the contrast between the 'pearl' beads and the clear water beads, it made for a great touchy feely sensory experience. It was also a great way to play with all those shells we have collected on our beach adventures!

This sensory bin was a great way for Elsie to develop her language skills, as she is still a little behind with her speech development, and playing with Jenson and Evie really helps her develop her communication skills, the different textures of the beads and the addition of the bottle gave great opportunity for them to use lots of describing words in their play. Soft, hard, wet, dry, full, empty etc were just some of the words I heard used.

One of Elsie's next steps from preschool at the end of the school year was to work on her number skills this was a great way to work on that and we did lots of counting as well as arranging the bin by shell type and bead type. (Another great way of doing this would be by using some oversized HUGE shells and using a marker to write numbers on)
