My Life. My Loves. My Family.

Whilst growing up my family always seemed, to outsiders, be made up of the 'norm', you know Mum, Dad, Brother, Sisters, Nan and Grandads, Aunties and Uncles, Cousins etc etc...It was always normal to me anyway.

I use normal in a sense that erm, what the word family is perceived as. Because I still believe to lots of people family means 2 adults 2 children, with an Aunties and Uncle,  couple of cousins and 2 Nan's and 2 Grandads. Yes?

Anyway as I was saying to an outsider it was your average family. But here is how my family was set up...

Mum and Dad (who lived together)
Brother and sisters (1 brother, 2 sisters...all younger)
Aunties and Uncles (many, 1 of whom is younger than me!)
Cousins
Nan and Grandad 1 (Mum's side)
Nan and Grandad 2 (Mums side)

I'll stop there for you to re-read the bottom two. It isn't a typo. Both sets of Nan and Grandad were my Mums side my Mum's StepMum and Dad and her StepDad and Mum, we didn't know my Dad's Mum and Dad and so to everyone else it seemed normal that I had 2 Nanna's and 2 Grandad's. Until I got older and people started asking 'Is that your Mum's Dad or your Dad's Dad?' And people would say 'He isn't your Uncle if he is younger than you!' and at that point, as a 10 year old child...you start feeling weird, and different to everyone else. In what was your safety net, your family, to everyone around you becomes WEIRD!

Anyhow's I got older and it didn't bother me what people thought. What did we have that was common ground with all of my school friends and their families?

Then when I was 21 I had Ellie. And she had the 'normal' family. That was until she was 5 months old and me and her Daddy split up. This was a whole new kettle of fish. We shared care, both met new partners and she had 2 normal families. Then when she was less than a year old my Mum and Dad split up (how it affected me is a whole other story, that maybe one day I will share but right now...no.) Anyhow so now she had a Mum and Dad who lived apart and a Nanny and Grandad who lived apart.

All of this was looking rather unconventional right! Anyhow it was never a problem to her or us. Until she got to around 3 years old and one day at nursery one of her friends parents came to collect this little girl together. Well that night all I had was questions. 'Why did A's Mummy and Daddy live together?' and 'Why did Nanny and Grandad (Dads side) live together?' she couldn't get her little head around it! I mean for all that was normal to her, 2 loving family's with a Mummy and partner and a Daddy and partner. Suddenly was different! Or at least she was noticing a difference.

But the common ground in all my answers?

Eventually her Dad and partner got married and she got a baby sister,  can I say that I have never ever made it difficult for her Dad or that side of her family to see her EVER...I feel the need to say that, before I move on...Anyways during this kind of time, I split up with my partner and we moved away from where her Dad lived, as I say it was nothing spiteful it was just time to come home! (My family live 100ish miles away from Ellies Dad's family)

I eventually met Dean and he had a little boy from a previous relationship (who doesn't appear on this blog, as I don't know, I don't think his Mum would like it and I don't want to feel like everything I put on here is been checked upon by his Mum, I mean maybe she wouldn't care and maybe she already read and wonders why he never appears...anyways now its getting complicated lets get back to the story!) we got married and have eventually had children too...Evie, Jenson and Elsie, making Ellie's family bigger than ever!

So compared to my family at age 10...here's Ellie's family at age 10...

Mum and Step dad (who live together)
Dad and Step Mum (who live together)
Brothers and sisters (2 brother's, 3 sisters...all younger than her and ALL just brother and sisters we don't have any of that 'half 'and 'step' talk around here!)
Aunties and Uncles
Cousins
Nan and Grandad 1 (Mum's side)
Nan and Grandad 2 (Mums side)
Nan and Grandad 3 (Dads side)
Nan and Grandad 4 (Step dads side)
Nan (Step Mums side)
Great Nanny 1 (Mums side)
Great Nanny and Grandad 2 (Mums side)

Wow! Hows that for a family! All that

Recently Evie and Jenson have started calling Ellie's Nan and Grandad (dads side) Nanny and Grandad too. At first I stopped them and corrected it....but now? I just go with it, you know a family is made up of love and my kids love them as much as they love other family members so why not? They certainly include them when they list their family to outsiders. Jenson recently told his pre-school teachers that he was going to see Nanny P and Grandad D at the weekend!

So that is our family...

both an extended family AND blended family.

But most importantly?

We are a Loved family!

Before you go..have you seen Matalan's new #MatalanModernFamilies ad? You can watch it below....

They have also done some research and did you know that the 'norm' I spoke about at the beginning of my babble? Is becoming less and less normal! Take a look at some of these families:

You see at the end of the day it doesn't matter if there is one set of parents or 2 sets of parents, 4 sets of Grandparents or no Grandparents...

It doesn't matter if there is 1 child or 10 children or even no children (like the lady above and her dog!) all you need to be a family is

Why not pop by and add you family portrait to Matalan's Modern Families photo album? You could win £250 to spend at Matalan!!

#WickedWednesdays

Things to note other than the obvious Elsie sat on the shelving casually reading a book:

* The pile of pj's near the door...

* Evie in the left corner...

* The 'tidy' book shelf

#ToddlerApprovedTuesday Week 27

Wow...another busy week in the 3 Princesses 1 Dude household, a weekend away (in which we had no WiFi and very limited mobile internet), meetings at Jenson's new school...means I have been a very bad linky host and as of yet I  still haven't got around to commenting on last weeks links. I am so sorry, I seem to have lost my mojo since Easter and I am finding it hard to get back on it, getting the laptop open seems to be the biggest task at the minute...and when I do open it I get distracted by twitter and facebook!

Anyways I sat with the monsters and they chose their faves from last week Evie loved Gym Bunny Mummy's Peppa Pig biscuits  of course!!

And Jenson decided that we need to go on A Day Out With Thomas (Linked up from Is It Wine o Clock Yet?)

What I Learnt At Blog Camp. 5 Blogging Myths BUSTED!

This weeks 5 Ideas For is a little different well as you may know, this weekend was Tots100 Blog Camp. I go to go out (minus the monsters!) for a whole blumming day and meet with friends and fellow bloggers for a day of bloggy learning! With lot of incredible sessions and, been a newbie blogger, lots to learn I thought I'd do a bit of a round up for fellow bloggers, about the stuff you thought you knew..

The Ordinary Moments #1 Walking In the Woods

We have started making quite a habit of heading out in the car up to a little country park, with woods and valleys to explore, walk and well just be happy! Snipe Dales, near Hagwortingham in Lincolnshire is actually only a 15 minute drive from our house and I cant believe we didn't think about taking the monsters their sooner...

The reserve is one of the few remaining examples showing the Lincolnshire Wolds as they were, and just one of a few valley systems still surviving in Lincolnshire. There are  two halves one with mixed woodland in the Country Park and the other consists of wet valleys, grassland and scrub in the nature reserve.

With lots of hills to run up and down...

Perfect Picnics with Drinkstuff

We love picnics, but more often than not we end up having to buy extra food because someone has spilled their drink over the picnic blanket and we end up with wet sarnies, soggy sausages and saturated Swiss rolls!  But I need not worry no more as the lovelies at Drink Stuff have send us the best picnic accessory ever...

Cardboard Box Playhouse.

Did you see my 5 Ideas For Homemade Toys? Last Sunday night I took a large box we had (that had been taking up space since Christmas!) and turned it into this ace playhouse for the kids...I know that it is still taking up space but at least it is getting used!

#WickedWednesdays

Its a well known fact that since Instagram came onto the scene EVERYONE has to take a photo of their food before they eat it. Its also a well known fact that little people, well they hate waiting for you to take photos of said food...

They wanna eat and they wanna eat now...

Come on...can I eat it yet?

Tough. I'm not waiting any longer....yummmmmm!

Let's see how much I can get in my mouth in one go!!!

Recipe. Homemade Pop Tarts.

If there is one thing the kids love as a breakfast treat it's a PopTart! But at almost £3 a box for 8, its an expensive breakfast (a box will only last us 2 breakfast times) for a family on a budget so I have been hunting around for a home made pop tart for a while now so after getting the gist of the ingredients I need I came up with this yummy Rhubarb and Custard inspired recipe.

#ToddlerApprovedTuesday Week 26

There is only one way I can kick of this weeks linkup by saying a huge CONGRATULATIONS to a couple of our linker-upperers (it is a word by the way!) Clare, from over at Clares Little Tots, gave birth to a little boy, Jack,  on Wednesday and Laura from over at Life With Baby Kicks who gave birth to a little boy on Thursday! Congrats to you both love from all of us over at 3 Princesses and 1 Dude!

As I did last week I have let Evie and Jenson choose their faves again this week! Evie chose Gym Bunny Mummy's Homemade Jammie Dodgers. They look super scrummy and I cant wait to make them later this week!

Jenson chose My Bored Toddlers Wheelbarrow Herb Garden this is definitly a weekend jobbie...

5 Ideas For...Homemade Toys ANYONE Can Make!

You know some days, OK, OK every day, I look through Pinterest and wonderful array of homemade toys that look fab. Hand sewn soft toys, sock monkeys (which we have attempted..and failed!) toys made from babies first clothes, play kitchens made from an old TV unit...the possibility's are endless, well that is are if you a) have the time b) are able to sew and c) you are a creative genius!

But what if you arent a creative genius? You don't have a sewing machine? and actually in the real world the only time you have spare is a couple of hours after the kids have gone bed before your snoring on the sofa in front of *insert favourite programme here* well here are 5 homemade toys you can make quick(ish), once the kids are in bed and they can wake up to a brand spanking new toy by morning!

You'll Always Be My Baby....

As you are all probably more than aware if you have a 3 or 4 year old or know someone who has a 3 or 4 year old, for us Mummy's and Daddy's of said 3 and 4 year old's (sorry that's the last time I will say that!)  the wait was over, the results in...would we get 1st choice of school? Or would our hearts sink at 2nd or maybe we would sob over 3rd choice. I've written this with Jenson in mind...

1st Photo..May 2011

Activity Time. Mini Beast Sensory Bin.

One of our 'things to do' on our Spring Bucket List is a mini beast hunt, this weekend we will be getting our wellies on and grabbing some magnifying glasses and binoculars (what is it with kids and those 2 items!) and going on  a muddy bug hunt...BUT what if you aren't too keen on bugs and beasts? Well I have come up with a great idea...well I thought it was a great idea anyway...

What We Watch...On You Tube.

So recently a lot of people have been asking me what or more who we watch on You Tube, who are my fave channels..and more so who do the monsters LOVE to watch! You may have seen me tweet my fave vloggers a few times but here they are in a list format and who I think you should be watching! So I thought I would kick of a new fortnightly feature 'What We Watch' with What we watch on you tube!

#WickedWednesdays

So one day last week we were catching up on you tube and watching everyone's blogs Ellie asked if I would be seeing the lovely Mrs Meldrum at Brit Mums Live...this lead to a question time about who was going to be there. Will Beth (Twinderelmo) be there? Would Leandra (larabeeuk) be there? And then Jenson piped up....

Will Brummy Mummy be there? Excitedly I told him YES! (Thinking this would evoke a happy reaction) but no instead he goes completely mard....pouty bottom lip, ignoring me, you know the killer silent tantrum...

Then for some (stupid) reason I decided to tell him that I would see Brummy Mummy AND Ruebens Mummy (he loves Rueben because "we are hair twins!!!!") Hannah (Mums Days) next week when we go away too, this resulted in a meltdown as he kicked the phone clear out my hands and it switched itself off!!!

He continued to tell me shout at me I was stupid and it wasn't fair!!!

#ToddlerApprovedTuesday Week 25

Hi guys! First up let me apologise for last weeks tardiness,  I didn't get round to pinning or tweeting any of your links (its on my to-do list I promise), I just don't know where the week went and having lots of family days has seen me going to bed early and getting lots of sleep...I promise over the next couple of days  will go back and comment and tweet AND pin them all!!  This week I thought I would try something a little different...

You see as the title suggests 'Toddler Approved Tuesday' I thought this week I would get Jenson and Evie to choose which they liked the look of and which they would really like to do this week...

And Evie, obviously, chose the My Little Pony Inspired Play dough from Clare Little Tots (although if she thinks I am making playdough she has another thing coming!!!)

So with this in mind here is our crafty shopping list for this week:

5 Ideas For...Cereal Box Crafts For Kids!

If there are 2 things we have an abundance of its cereal boxes and toilet rolls! You see I have an admission to make...left over food that could be made into another meal, socks with holes that could be stitched? They all get thrown away BUT the actual rubbish like boxes and tubes and stuffs like that, well I keep them because they come in useful you see!

The Week That Was...4th April - 10th April 2015.

This week has been an odd one...full of highs and a few lows. As well as me been totally confused by what day it is!

Getting My Feet Flip Flop Ready.

Spring Time is HERE! Which means sooner or later I will be wearing sandles, flip flops, open toes...whatever you want to call them I will be wearing them! BUT right now, my feet resemble the Gruffalo's, they need some love and some attention and that, my friends, is where Superdrug come in!

Quick Craft with Jenson. Not-So-Noisy Shakers

Sooooo...Jenson's new favourite thing is making craft videos for our You tube channel so this half term we have been a little busy making lots of crafty video's to share with you! Todays craft is perfect mainly because its a shaker...kids love shakers BUT its not actually as annoying as you usual shakers because we have used straws instead of rice or pasta! Let us know what you think we would love it if you gave us a thumbs up and subscribed!
